Pirate Bay founder suspected of hacking police databases
Pirate Bay co-founder Gottfrid Svartholm, who has been extradited from Cambodia to Sweden to answer for allegedly hacking of Swedish IT company Logica and the Nordea bank mainframe has been named as suspect in another hacking case.
Along with an unnamed 20-year-old Danish citizen, Svartholm is thought to have breached and downloaded a large number of files from mainframe systems of CSC, a company tasked with keeping and handling sensitive information belonging to the Danish police, as well as the Danish Tax Authority and the Modernisation Agency.
According to a press release (via Google Translate) issued by the police on Thursday, personal identity numbers, drivers’ records, and more has been compromised, but there is no evidence that the attackers have used the stolen information in any way.
The hackers have also allegedly accessed the Schengen Information System – used by border guards, the police, customs, visa and judicial authorities throughout the Schengen Area – and information on wanted persons contained in it.
The attacks were performed between April and August 2012 and, according to The Register, the Danish police discovered them after having been tipped off by the Swedish police, who found a Danish IP address among the ones detected in the Logica attack.
