Introduction

Today’s high resolution digital cameras ensure that active photographers have to manage massive amounts of data. Keeping this data safe can present a challenge.

This book aims to help photographers figure out their options and secure their digital collections for the long run. Read on to find out what it offers.

About the author

Patrick H. Corrigan has authored several books and numerous magazine articles on networking, data storage, disaster prevention and recovery, and other IT-related topics. He has been an avid photographer since the age of twelve.

Inside the book

Despite the fact that memory card corruption, damage and data loss are a fairly common occurence, most photographers are not aware of these issues until a problem occurs.

To make you aware of the threats and take precautions, the book discusses image capture media and storage technologies. The text goes into lots of details and presents a good overview. I only wish the author spent more time discussing the cloud, which is probably the most common backup vector used today.

If you have a small number of photographs, transferring them to your workstation and organizing them is simple. However, as your collection starts to grow and your sessions become more involved, you’re going to have a problem keeping up with your data if you don’t become organized. The book offers tips on how to do exactly that, and showcases a few popular tools for the job.

Unsurprisingly, storage, backup and recovery get a lot of space. Wondering what hardware to use and how to use it? What can you do if you lose your data? You’ll find your answers here.

My 2 cents

If you’re a beginner or a serious amateur producing vast amounts of photographs that need to be stored for a long time, this book will be a valuable guide.
