“Casey Anthony confession video” scam spreads

The verdict in the high-profile Casey Anthony case has ultimately disappointed a lot of people who believe that she did kill her two-year-old daughter, and scammers have seized upon the fact that they would welcome some proof of her guilt.

So, they set up a survey scam on Facebook using as bait a video that supposedly shows her confessing her guilt to her lawyer:

Clicking on the link takes the curious user to a page where he is required to press the “Jaa” (“Share” in Finnish) button in order to watch the video – an action that shares the original spammy message with the user’s circle of friends.

Having done that, the user is again redirected, this time to a bogus YouTube page and asked to “verify” his age by completing a survey. In the end, the user’s curiosity won’t be satisfied – he will be taken to a news report revealing the handing down of the original sentence.

“If you got hit by this scam, make sure you have removed the entries from your news feed (to stop them being shared amongst your friends) and check your profile has not any unwanted ‘Likes’ under your ‘Likes and interests’,” advises Sophos.
