Military server compromised
The Boston Globe reports that a random online search for software revealed a serious security breach into the servers of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at Boston University.
More than 6,500 ROTC members have had their personal information (including their Social Security numbers) compromised. Luckily, there were no instances of identity theft following the breach.
The unfortunate incident happened because of a file transfer program that an unknown member installed onto a ROTC server, and it happened last September. The administrators at the University have been notified on this July 28. That means that almost a year passed since then and that this situation could have potentially lasted even more, were it not for pure coincidence.
To prevent future breaches of this (and hopefully other) kind, Boston University has called in a security company for consultation.
