High-speed gigabit IP network equipment LSI
Oki has developed a low power consumption gigabit high-speed network processor, the “ML7240,” for the network equipment (i.e. Home/SOHO routers) market. ML7240 includes a RISC-type CPU, IP protocol engine, QoS (Quality of Service) accelerator, IPsec (IP security protocol) accelerator, voice engine, Gigabit Ether MAC (2ch), and other peripherals, making it an LSI ideal for high-speed, home/SOHO routers and VoIP gateway equipment. In addition to the LSI, OKI plans to offer the drivers necessary to configure network equipment, and other software such as middleware, which will help users shorten the development time for products using ML7240.
In the ML7240, the IP protocol engine takes care of core network processes such as routing and protocol activities. The IPsec and QoS accelerators help ensure highly secured quality communication. And the embedded OKI’s proprietary DSP is in charge of voice-related functionality such as voice compression, echo cancellation and tone generation / detection, etc. which are essential to VoIP systems.
This rich distributed task-sharing structure contributes to less load to the built-in CPU so as to offer more capability reserved for user’s applications and achieve a mere 1.5W (typ.) power consumption in normal operation while keeping Gigabit throughput. Thus, the ML7240 is the best suitable device for the leading solution provider users, offering heatsink-less high-throughput IP network devices.
