TippingPoint Extends UnityOne Intrusion Prevention Systems to Block Attacks Targeting VoIP
TippingPoint Establishes VoIP Security Research Lab to Study VoIP Cyber Threats
AUSTIN, Texas – June 23, 2004 – TippingPoint Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTI), the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that its UnityOneTM Intrusion Prevention Systems now provide security and bandwidth protection for Voice over IP (VoIP) protocols and services.
VoIP represents the convergence of the voice and data networks. While VoIP business opportunities are significant, it also brings new vulnerabilities and opportunities for cyber attacks. This convergence exposes the voice network and voice infrastructure to the same threat environment as the Internet. These security risks stem from vulnerabilities in VoIP applications, in the underlying operating systems and infrastructure, and in VoIP protocols such as H.323 and SIP.
According to Senior Analyst of Information Security at Enterprise Strategy Group Jon Oltsik, “In addition to the typical cyber attacks we see today, the emergence of VoIP will bring new security threats. Administrators will have a new set of VoIP patches to apply and test in addition to the assortment of patches required for today’s commonly used software and hardware. However, patching is only one aspect of security, and does not eliminate the threat of denial-of-service attacks. Companies deploying VoIP should implement network security products that offer VoIP protection.”
TippingPoint’s UnityOne protects the VoIP infrastructure against denial-of-service attacks, worms, viruses and Trojans at multi-gigabit speeds. In addition to behavior-based protection, UnityOne provides vulnerability-based protection against security holes in H.323, SIP and other protocols used in VoIP. VoIP traffic is sensitive to latency and bandwidth variations, and requires quality of service guarantees to operate effectively. The UnityOne’s bandwidth management capabilities can prioritize traffic and manage bandwidth associated with other applications like peer-to-peer file sharing.
TippingPoint is also announcing the formation of a VoIP Security Research Lab to discover and analyze VoIP threats. TippingPoint’s industry-recognized security experts work alongside VoIP vendors and customers to analyze weaknesses in VoIP architectures and discover new vulnerabilities through functional protocol testing. TippingPoint’s research will facilitate better education and training for customers and partners. Other findings will be presented in trade magazines, security journals, and at conferences. These efforts ensure TippingPoint’s UnityOne protects against the latest VoIP infrastructure and protocol vulnerabilities and attack techniques while enabling fast, secure VoIP networks.
According to Jim Johnson, vice president and general manager of TippingPoint’s Service Provider Business Unit, “Widespread deployment and adoption of VoIP is imminent. TippingPoint will remain on the forefront of VoIP security and research to benefit the public, the service provider community and our customers. Our primary goal is to provide security while enabling our service provider customers to deliver premium IP services such as VoIP. We believe TippingPoint’s UnityOne is the only IPS that meets the in-line, multi-gigabit performance requirements of broadband service providers.”
TippingPoint’s UnityOne provides Intrusion Prevention, Bandwidth Management and Content-based QOS at gigabit speeds through total packet inspection. UnityOne Intrusion Prevention protects the service provider’s infrastructure and subscriber desktops from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. UnityOne Bandwidth Management enables service providers to prioritize traffic and optimize the subscriber’s online experience. UnityOne Content-based QOS enables service providers to recognize high priority traffic and guarantee quality of service.
