Utah Transit Authority Selects TippingPoint’s UnityOne Intrusion Prevention Systems to Protect Its Network and Block Spyware
AUSTIN, Texas – May 27, 2004 – TippingPoint Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTI), the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has implemented the UnityOneâ„? Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to protect its network from cyber threats, unwanted Peer-to-Peer traffic, and Spyware.
TippingPoint’s UnityOne blocks over 2,000 attacks per week at UTA, 75 of which are listed as major or critical attacks. UTA uses an outsourced solution to filter incoming e-mail for spam and viruses, but in some cases infected messages or worms pass through the outsourced solution, and UnityOne blocks them. According to John Jones, network supervisor at UTA, “It is amazing to see the different attacks being blocked, everything from Code Red to infected emails. You can never have too much armor in the battle against network attacks, and UnityOne has proved itself in this fight.”
UTA segmented the network into four main areas using two UnityOne-200 IPS’s. When a user plugs an infected laptop into the network, UnityOne identifies it and isolates it from spreading to the other segments. UTA is using TippingPoint’s Peer-to-Peer and Spyware filters to block non-critical traffic and reclaim bandwidth. In addition to blocking or throttling Peer-to-Peer traffic, UnityOne includes Spyware filters that are able to prevent previously installed Spyware from functioning and block future installations. Additionally, UnityOne pinpoints each Spyware installation so administrators can remove the Spyware.
Jones said, “By using the Spyware filters, we have removed this type of software from most of the systems where it was unwillingly installed, allowing us to use our limited Internet bandwidth for what we want instead of allowing Spyware perpetrators to steal it from us along with information that they have no right to obtain. By using the Peer-to-Peer filters, UnityOne has opened our eyes to the users who were infiltrating our network to share files and serve content outside our organization. UnityOne enabled us to stop this activity, and has allowed UTA to protect itself from copyright infringement litigation and potential attacks that enter the network through this type of backdoor.”
“What most impressed us about the UnityOne is the customer support. From the first phone call made I knew that I was dealing with a company that was dedicated to supporting their product, no hold time, quick response and courteous service. The timely Virtual Software Patches that are sent on a regular basis to update the UnityOne IPS are also to their credit.”
