Interxion Warns Companies Of Potential Data Loss in Migration Process, As Support For Windows NT Comes To an End
Microsoft is set to end support for Windows NT at the end of this year*, meaning approximately two million customers must soon execute a migration strategy to avoid running a vulnerable unsupported operating system in 2005. With the migration process notoriously time consuming and prone to error, businesses need to address the issue now, by implementing a strategy that mitigates the risk of data loss and ensures the migration process is completed before the deadline, warns Interxion**.
“The migration process to a new operating system carries a significant risk of memory fragmentation and data loss, but companies can eliminate the risk of data loss by duplicating data before the information is transferred from the legacy system to the new system,” said Anthony Foy, group MD of Interxion. “Microsoft’s withdrawal of support for Windows NT is fast approaching so companies really need to put data resilience at the top of their agendas before it is too late. Waiting until after the deadline could leave businesses vulnerable to virus and hack attacks, as Microsoft will no longer be obliged to offer security fixes.”
“The migration process will require detailed planning regarding the movement of users, groups and resources and should be supported by Microsoft’s server migration tool kit. The move from the legacy system to a newer version, such as Windows 2003, carries a number of benefits including tighter security and improved performance on file serving software,” added Foy.
