Prominent UK University Deploys Blue Coat and Secure Computing for Advanced Web Filtering

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & SAN JOSE, Calif.– Nov. 3, 2003–Blue Coat(TM) Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI) and Secure Computing Corporation (Nasdaq:SCUR) today announced that Nottingham Trent University has deployed Blue Coat’s ProxySG(TM) 800 with Secure Computing’s SmartFilter® Web Filtering solution to control Web antivirus and monitor users communicating over the Internet.

With more than 7,000 PCs and 26,000 users, Nottingham Trent University was concerned about users downloading inappropriate, illegal and copyrighted content from the Internet. The University was also concerned about viruses infecting its network through various forms of Web communication. To solve the problem, the university deployed the Blue Coat secure proxy appliance with Secure Computing SmartFilter software to protect against Web viruses, malicious code and inappropriate content.

“The Internet is a very important tool for Nottingham students and faculty, but we recognize that these tremendous benefits also bring risks,” said John Cheesbrough, network system manager at Nottingham Trent University. “With Blue Coat’s secure proxy appliance and SmartFilter, we can secure our network from viruses and monitor Web usage for inappropriate surfing or downloading of files.”

Blue Coat ProxySG appliances integrate advanced proxy functionality with security services such as content filtering and Web virus scanning, without impacting network performance. SmartFilter enables organizations to build and enforce sophisticated Web-usage policies. Users can be denied access to specific Web sites, or coached within their browser session about acceptable use standards. SmartFilter’s international Control List continuously categorizes millions of Web sites into content groups, including pornography, gambling, and MP3. The integrated Cyfin® Reporter performs detailed analysis on all Web surfing activity.

“It is a great success for us when we can work with our partners to bring customers like Nottingham Trent University a comprehensive, cost-effective solution that enables them to utilize the Web effectively while also protecting against inappropriate or malicious content,” said Chris Peterson, vice president of OEM and channel sales at Secure Computing.
