ActivCard Appoints Former NSA Deputy Director William Crowell to Board of Directors
Crowell’s Experience Bolsters ActivCard’s Foundation in the Global Security Arena and Expands Potential to Provide Identity Management Solutions to Government and Enterprise Business

(Nasdaq: ACTI; Nasdaq Europe: ACTI), the leader in IDentity Management (IDM) software, today announced the appointment of William Crowell to the company’s Board of Directors. Mr. Crowell previously served as Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), and as President and Chief Executive Officer of Cylink Corporation until its acquisition in February 2003 by SafeNet, Inc. of Baltimore, MD. He brings years of government experience and a strong background in security and defense-related technologies to ActivCard, strengthening the Company’s position as a trusted leader by organizations from enterprises to governments around the world. “William Crowell’s leadership in the U.S. intelligence community, his expertise as a Silicon Valley chief executive officer and his recognition and involvement with U.S. government projects as a security technology expert helps further ActivCard’s role as a preferred supplier to the government market for IDentity Management software,” said Steven Humphreys, CEO and Chairman of ActivCard.
ActivCard currently supplies IDentity Management software solutions, including its ActivCard Gold(TM) and Trinity(TM) products, to the U.S. federal government and government agencies around the world, as well as to enterprise businesses, health care organizations and financial institutions. In addition, ActivCard recently reincorporated its publicly listed corporate parent entity as a U.S. company after years of development on the Common Access Card (CAC) program with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). William P. Crowell is an independent consultant and expert in security and intelligence systems. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Santa Clara, California-based Cylink Corporation, a leading provider of network security solutions, until its acquisition in February 2003 by SafeNet, Inc., a leader in VPN technology.
Mr. Crowell came to Cylink from the NSA, where he held a series of senior executive positions, including Deputy Director of Operations and Deputy Director of the Agency.
In March 2002, Mr. Crowell was appointed to The Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age, which published a landmark study of the information technology and policy needs for Homeland Security. He was also appointed to the Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology, which published a report that identified and evaluated technology-driven solutions to improve the security and efficiency of national and local aviation.
Mr. Crowell’s other appointments include the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Task Force on Terrorism and Deterrence. This group of experts was charged with recommending new areas of research in surveillance, intelligence, and weapons technology that can assist in countering terrorist threats. In addition, in December 2001, Mr. Crowell was appointed by the National Research Council to serve on the Committee on Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism: Panel on Information Technology. This panel evaluated the terrorist threat to the US Information Technology Infrastructure and made recommendations for dealing with this emerging problem and its potential consequences.
