Trend Micro and Postini Join Forces to Offer Gateway-Based Anti-Spam Service for the Enterprise

Technology Leaders in Antivirus Software and Spam Blocking Services Offer Best-of-Breed Approach to Spam Protection

Cupertino, CA – March 3, 2003 — Trend Micro Inc. (NASDAQ: TMIC, TSE: 4704), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security and Postini Inc., a leading email security service provider, have joined forces to deliver an enterprise anti-spam service designed to block spam at the Internet gateway.

Under the terms of an exclusive agreement, Trend Micro will incorporate the Postini Anti-Spam Engine (PASE), the core of Postini’s email security services, into its gateway antivirus and content security products. The new service, Trend Micro(tm) Spam Prevention Service, can potentially block 90-95 percent or more of spam with filters that customers can customize themselves based on their business needs and sensitivity to various categories of spam.

“By adding best-of-breed anti-spam technology to our gateway offering, we will satisfy our customers’ urgent need for world-class anti-spam protection,” said Steve Chang, Founder and CEO of Trend Micro.

As companies increasingly depend on the Internet to conduct business, the number of spam and email-borne virus threats to corporate email users continues to rise. At the same time, “spammers” have gotten increasingly more sophisticated in the way they deliver unsolicited email. According to industry analyst META Group, the percentage of inbound SMTP traffic classified as spam can be as high as 40% for some organizations.

“Spam has a debilitating effect on email systems and is now far more than a nuisance for end users. IT groups must aggressively block spam with the same diligence they apply to virus blocking,” said Matt Cain, Senior Research Analyst, META Group. “We believe tools which combine spam and virus blocking represent an excellent approach to improving overall email hygiene.”

Trend Micro was the first to offer customers an enterprise-class Internet gateway antivirus solution, and continues to innovate in this area. Industry analyst IDC holds Trend Micro as the worldwide market share leader in Internet gateway and server-based virus protection. Postini filters spam for more than 900 corporate and ISP customers. The Postini Anti-Spam Engine is in its fourth year of commercial use and is an industry leader in message throughput, which has been measured in excess of 50 messages per second on a single processor SPARC based server.

Trend Micro’s customers will benefit from Postini’s anti-spam heuristics based on real-time statistics of 50 to 60 million messages Postini processes daily for over 3 million users of its email perimeter security service business. Based on patent-pending spam identification algorithms, Postini’s technology identifies junk mail in milliseconds – even if the message has been customized or has never been seen elsewhere on the Internet. Together, the two market leaders will provide customers with an integrated, best-of-breed approach to managing spam.

“Postini is committed to providing access to our anti-spam technology to a broad range of corporate users, in the manner that best meets their needs. Whether it’s running on a server or gateway in conjunction with Trend Micro’s anti-virus products or through Postini’s own email system security service offerings, the Postini Anti-Spam Engine protects enterprises from the loss of employee productivity, exposure of their staff to pornographic content, and rising IT costs associated with unsolicited email,” said Shinya Akamine, President and CEO, Postini Inc.
