Microsoft Issues Case Study About Schuff Intl’s Use Of Mail Essentails
GFI’s Mail essentials protects Schuff Intl’s lifeline email system against threats
London, UK, 8 February 2002 – Schuff International protects its “lifeline” email system using GFI’s Mail essentials for Exchange to block email viruses, exploits, HTML scripts and potentially malicious attachments before they can affect its mail servers and users. This deployment is detailed in a newly issued Exchange Server 2000 Customer Solution report published by Microsoft Corp. at http://www.microsoft.com/servers/evaluation/casestudies/schuff.asp.
“Schuff International’s use of Mail essentials for Exchange is proof of the product’s scalability and reliability,” declared Nick Galea, GFI CEO. “As the Microsoft case study shows, Mail essentials in combination with Exchange Server is a powerful, robust, email content checking and anti-virus solution that delivers on it promise to protect an organization’s email users from email viruses and attacks.”
Email content checking is crucial: anti-virus protection is not enough
In the case study, Schuff International systems engineer, Greg Shapley, explains that he began seeking a tighter mail server security solution when the Love Letter virus bypassed the company’s existing anti-virus program and spread throughout its 400 desktops in 2000. Describing email as “an important lifeline in our business”, Mr. Shapley wanted to prevent this from happening again.
“With the Love Letter virus, we had our anti-virus program running, but because the virus was so new, and was moving so fast, our program didn’t catch it,” Mr. Shapley said. “That’s why we wanted a program like Mail essentials that would screen attachments on the basis of attachment type. Mail essentials lets us screen attachments in a secure fashion, so we can see if it’s a legitimate email that someone should receive, or if it’s a potential virus or an email that for some other reasons should not be let into the system.”
Mr. Shapley’s choice of Mail essentials for Exchange proved correct: “When the AnnaKournikova virus hit, Mail essentials for Exchange caught every infected message before it reached our Exchange Server,” he affirmed. “I firmly believe companies are senselessly ‘rolling the dice’ without this kind of email protection.”
