Trend Micro enhances protection for industrial orgs
Trend Micro, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, announced its complete smart factory security solutions, designed to provide enhanced visibility and protection for embattled industrial control system (ICS) environments. The solutions will secure across all layers of Industry 4.0, mitigating this growing area of cyber risk to keep operations running.
Gartner predicts that approximately 49 billion IoT devices will be connected in 2021 and that number will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.
Even if just a very limited percentage of those devices are Industrial IoT (IIoT) devices controlling or monitoring industrial processes like manufacturing, the sheer number and the pervasiveness of IIoT will most likely lead to an increase in security incidents[2].
Proof of this growing risk is seen in the number of reported ICS vulnerabilities, which increased by over 224% from 2017 to 2018. Traditional security solutions are not built to secure these environments, so Trend Micro took a new approach.
“In the race to build connected industrial environments, security gaps are introduced that neither IT nor OT teams are able to manage,” said Akihiko Omikawa, executive vice president of IoT security for Trend Micro.
“We knew security solutions needed to be built differently to work effectively in this setting. Our new products are designed for Industry 4.0 and backed by Trend Micro’s 30 years of experience and global threat intelligence to provide the best possible overall protection.
“Our motivation is to give customers peace of mind knowing that they are covered across all layers and new connections in their smart factories.”
Two new solutions are available to mitigate cyber risks in connected industrial settings. These include a firewall and intrusion prevention system (IPS), EdgeFire and EdgeIPS, to limit the exposure of insecure communications channels and protect against vulnerability exploitation.
Additionally, the security management console provides visibility across installed OT equipment. The OT Defense Console ties in with the firewall and IPS to help managers identify the root cause of attacks.
Alongside these new offerings, Trend Micro has updated two existing products to best integrate with the new solutions. The first, Trend Micro Safe Lock TXOne edition, aims to protect general purpose operating systems, like Windows and Linux, by preventing malware and unauthorised programs from executing, including those from USBs.
Secondly, Trend Micro Portable Security 3 receives an update to easily clean up malware infections in ICS environments.
The value of these new smart factory solutions is heightened when they’re used in a multi-layered security approach alongside existing Trend Micro hybrid cloud security and network defense solutions. Altogether, this group of smart factory security solutions can persistently prevent and detect attacks.
