Fake “Urgent billing update” email leads to Virgin Media, Paypal phishing page
Customers of UK-based telecom and ISP Virgin Media are being targeted with a clever spam campaign that is after their account information, but also PayPal account login details and payment card information.
Virgin Media warned about the phishing email impersonating the company on Friday. The subject line says that the email contains a billing update.
“You’re now all set up to receive your bills online,” claims the email. “So it’s time to upgrade, before you lose your email access. When your next bill is ready for you to see, we’ll send you an e-mail to let you know. Then simply log into Your Account and Update your billing details!”
The email contains a link that supposedly leads directly to Virgin Media’s login page, and the phishers are hoping that users will follow it without thinking twice.
Those who do will land on a spoofed version of the legitimate login page, and after submitting their login information, they are asked to link their PayPal account to ther Virgin Media account, as well as to enter payment card information:
“After filling in the form, you will be redirected to the genuine Virgin media website. Meanwhile, the scammers can collect all of the information you have submitted and use it to hijack your Virgin Media and PayPal accounts and use your credit card details to commit fraudulent transactions in your name,” Hoax-Slayer warns.
