Anonymous’ OpUSA is under way

Anonymous’ “Operation USA” began yesterday and among its first confirmed victims is the Honolulu Police Department.

According to Hawaii News Now, the department has stated that its “HPD Alerts” database was accessed, and subscribers’ names, phone numbers, and email addresses were compromised and published online. The group behind the hack – X-Blackerz Inc. – has also published personal and login details of two dozen HPD staff.

According to Cisco’s Jaeson Schultz, a Ohio Election Assistance Commission site also appears to have been hacked and defaced.

Hackers News Bulletin is keeping an ever expanding list of websites, email accounts affected by #OpUSA, but which attacks have legitimately succeeded is hard to tell or currently verify.

It must also be pointed out that many of the listed sites belong to small businesses and individuals, and also many have nothing to do with the U.S. In fact, some of the targeted sites belong to the Chinese government.

But all in all, the damage inflicted by the operation seems to be minimal.

Softpedia reports that some Anonymous hackers have abstained from attacking and say that OpUSA has been started by Muslim extremists.

“We have noticed that all of the people taking part in this operation have never been part of our group before. They are all new users. Anyone can claim to be part of Anonymous. We believe these attacks are being promoted by people who want to see CISPA passed and need a good reason for it,” claims one of the abstaining Anons.
