LulzSec leader Sabu helps police arrest Anonymous hackers

Sabu, the apparent leader of the LulzSec hacktivist group, has been unmasked by the FBI last June and has since been working with them to secure evidence against the group’s other members.

According to a report by Fox News, Sabu is allegedly one Hector Xavier Monsegur, an unemployed, 28-year-old father of two living in a housing project on New York’s Lower East Side.

The investigation resulted in a coordinated action by law enforcement agencies in Ireland and the US that resulted in the arrest of three individuals, and the final indictment of five:

• Ryan Ackroyd (“Kayla”) – expected to be take into custody in London on Tuesday
• Jake Davis (“Topiary”), previously arrested by the UK’s Metropolitan Police Service’s Central e-Crime Unit
• Darren Martyn (“pwnsauce”) and Donncha O’Cearrbhail (“palladium”), both of Ireland
• Jeremy Hammond (“Anarchaos”) of Chicago.

The indictment is to be unsealed on Tuesday morning in a New York court, along with the 12 hacking related charges against Monsegur, to which he reportedly already pleaded guilty.

Of the five (well, six if one counts “Sabu”), only Jeremy Hammond is thought not be be a member of LulzSec but of Anonymous, and is considered to be the mastermind behind the high-profile Stratfor hack.
