“Chuck Norris is dead” Facebook scam
Chuck Norris, the popular martial artist/ actor whose “tough guy” image has spawned a countless jokes and memes on the Internet, has been killed off by Facebook scammers:
“See the video to find out how he died. News today of Chuck Norris death at age 71 has been met with confusion and humour, but sadly it is true,” says the message that appeared on users’ walls.
By following the offered link, users are taken to page that seemingly contains a video about Chuck Noriss’ passing, but in order to view it they are required to complete a survey, in exchange for which they will also supposedly get one of three prizes (a free $100 Starbucks gift card, an iPad 2 or a 52″ HDTV).
Unfortunately for them, there are no real prizes, and there is no real video – the scammers are after the users’ personal information (name, address, email address, phone number, data of birth).
“If you’re one of the many people who fell for this or similar scams, please check your Facebook page to ensure that you are not spreading any messages to your online friends and ensure that you have revoked any Facebook applications, events and ‘like’d pages that you are uncomfortable with,” warns Sophos.
