Bank of America customer and staff accounts compromised

News that some Bank of America customers from the Greater Detroit area have discovered their accounts were pilfered after their debit cards were declined has raised the possibility that the bank has suffered a security breach.

According to Click on Detroit, those customers have found out something was seriously amiss when they went to a branch of the bank to find out why their cards have been rejected and discovered that other customers were there for the same reason.

Details about the situation are few, reports Bank Info Security. Bank of America issued a statement saying that the situation isn’t due to a breach. It admitted that more than $100,000 worth of suspicious transitions has been effectuated, and that they are still trying to discover how widespread the issue is and how it came to pass.

“If we think a customer’s card has been compromised at a third-party location, we’ll block and reissue the card, which is what we did in this case,” said BofA spokeswoman Diane Wagner. For the time being, temporary debit cards are being issued to the affected customers.

The accounts of two bank staffers have also reportedly been compromised, making the public speculate whether this was an inside job.
