Malware cause of Blue Screens of Death following latest patch?
It seems that the problems that some Windows users have been experiencing lately after installing the February security updates from Microsoft are due to malware on the system. Some of the company’s support engineers have been sent to retrieve affected systems from customers, so that memory dumps can be analyzed.
The users have been faced with the Blue Screen of Death after applying the KB977165 patch in the MS10-015 advisory, and were unable to boot the OS.
Microsoft’s Security Response Center has investigated the issue and came out with the solution in a day, advising people to uninstall the patch in question by following these steps:
- 1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console. Once you are in the Repair Screen,
- 2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst
- 3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt
- 4. When complete, type this command: exit
Having done that, they advise the users to use an automated solution for securing the computer against the original vulnerability until another patch is made available.
