SmoothWall Launches Modular Firewall For Small To Medium Enterprise Market
June 14, 2005 – SmoothWall Limited, the network security specialist today launched SmoothWall Corporate Firewall, an Internet gateway firewall targeted at small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The new product replaces Corporate Server 3 and is the ideal network security solution for companies with up to 250 users.
SmoothWall Corporate Firewall addresses the growing need in the market for Internet security solutions between desktop products for consumers and enterprise class product for large organisations. Data from 5,000 SmoothWall customers shows that all Internet users need rock solid security – a typical SME organisation can expect to receive, on average, 200 direct network attacks per week.
“As companies run an increasing number of business critical applications via the internet, allied with the ongoing increase in security threats, so the need for increased internet security has grown,” said George Lungley, managing director of SmoothWall Limited. “Corporate Firewall addresses these issues and includes technology that was only previously available to enterprise customers.”
Corporate Firewall is the next evolution of SmoothWall’s original Corporate Server product. Much of the underlying program code has been rewritten to create a more flexible security platform for future developments, with key developments including:
* Deep Packet Inspection: Blocking of port agile Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic
* Operation: Additional reports, new monitoring facilities, even easier to use and support
* User need configuration: Configure what alert, report and status information to be displayed on the firewall home page
* IDS: Improved Intrusion Detection System
* Hardware support: Support for the latest hardware including a comprehensive range of SATA disk controllers
The modular design of Corporate Firewall allows the security system to grow with business needs, providing the ability to retrospectively add facilities like Secure Remote Access for field staff, VPN connectivity to branch offices, Web Content Filtering and Bandwidth Management.
According to industry analysts Infonetics Research, the worldwide network security appliance and software revenue is forecast to grow 27 per cent to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2006. The industry analysts said VPN and firewall appliances and software made up 78 per cent of the first quarter of 2005 revenues. Infonetics expects total annual revenue to grow to $6.5 billion by 2008.
