Symantec Introduces Comprehensive Email Security Appliances Designed To Protect Customers From Unwanted Spam And Virus Threats

Symantec, the global leader in information security, has announced Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series. Designed to provide a secure email gateway, Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliances help ensure an available email infrastructure. Customers are offered the highest level of spam and virus protection through the integration of Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam and Symantec AntiVirus technologies. Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series also integrates volume management, attack prevention, content filtering, encryption, anti-forgery and archiving functionality into a single solution. Scheduled to be available in February, Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliances are designed for medium and large businesses.

Email is the single most critical channel for both internal and external business communication, said Enrique Salem, senior vice president, gateway and network security, Symantec Corp. Symantec is the only industry-leading company that can deliver best-of-breed integrated email security solutions at the network, gateway and server layers with multiple deployment options for all organisations.

Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliances provide a series of email security features including an innovative Email Firewall to significantly reduce the total volume of email. This is enabled by a unique combination of SMTP connection management and attack detection to reduce email infrastructure costs by restricting connections from dangerous servers. Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series offers customers a set of automated and configurable connection management features that go into effect as soon as an incoming connection is detected. The solution can be automatically configured to block spam attacks, virus attacks, directory harvest attacks and connections from senders that have been identified as suspicious.

For many organisations, the growing spam problem is one of the most pressing issues faced today. Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliances include Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam technology that leverages over 20 spam protection techniques, delivering antispam effectiveness rates of 95% and the industry’s highest accuracy rate (99.9999%) against false positives (legitimate email getting categorised as spam). Symantec’s global Brightmail Logistics Operations Centers (BLOC) analyse spam across the globe and provide secure, automatic spam filter updates every 10 minutes to help thwart attacks.

Today, the majority of malicious code still enters an organization through email, thus it is critical that a best-of-breed email security solution provides strong antivirus capabilities. Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series incorporates award-winning Symantec AntiVirus technologies to provide real-time protection against email-borne threats. Symantec’s Scan Engine provides rapid and reliable virus protection by scanning all incoming and outgoing Internet email traffic via a multi-threaded scanning system. The virus protection technology also offers customers a mass-mailer cleanup feature that automatically removes the email associated with mass-mailing worms.

Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliances are designed to meet the growing needs of IT administrators for inbound and outbound content filtering. The new content compliance functionality allows IT administrators to gain control over inbound and outbound email content so they can enforce corporate email policies, reduce legal liability and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. IT administrators can scan email against pre-defined or custom keyword lists, limit which types of attachments the organisation will accept, or choose to archive email for a group of users.

Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series provides customers a high level of message integrity by supporting encrypted connections using TLS (transport layer security). Customers are also provided the ability to check the integrity of the from address of email using the SPF (sender policy framework) standard.

All of the innovative Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series features are managed by an intuitive user interface that enables complex administrative tasks to be completed in a simplified fashion. Mail and system management tasks are performed through the Web-based Control Center. The Control Center allows IT administrators to set mail policies for different groups of users via LDAP, upgrade to the latest version with an easy-to-use upgrade wizard, or view over 50 reports that summarise the status of their gateway systems.

The Control Center also supports end-user login to view quarantined spam or set individual mail preferences. By customising individual block and allow lists, end-users are able to specify email addresses that will always be blocked as well as designate senders who are allowed to bypass antispam filtering. End-users are also offered the ability to block messages based on which language they are written in.

Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series is in the Symantec Email Security Solutions family, which includes best-of-breed email security at the network, gateway and groupware layers with multiple deployment options for all organisations.
