Symantec Managed Security Services Listed In Leaders Quadrant In Managed Security Services Magic Quadran

CUPERTINO, Calif. – August 4, 2004 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced it has maintained its position in the Leaders Quadrant of the most recent Gartner North American Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) Magic Quadrant Report. Published July 26, 2004, the report analyzes the MSSP marketplace during the second half of 2003 and evaluates providers on their completeness of vision and ability to execute in the North American Managed Security Services market.

“Symantec is pleased to be recognized in the leader quadrant in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for managed security services providers,” said Grant Geyer, vice president of Global Managed Security Services at Symantec. “The intelligence gathered by our global network of security operations centers, combined with the early warning capabilities of our DeepSight Threat Management System, positions Symantec Managed Security Services to offer the most comprehensive view of the global threat landscape, complemented by actionable guidance for practitioners. We consider Gartner’s thorough evaluation of the managed security services sector confirms Symantec’s vision, focus, and enduring commitment to stand as a trusted advisor and partner in reducing our customers’ overall security risk.”

According to the report, the managed security services market in North America continued to grow strongly in the second half of 2003, amidst both consolidation and new market entrants. Revenue increased by 19 percent during this period.

Gartner made several updates to their evaluation criteria in April 2004 to include looking for capabilities such as vulnerability internal scanning and security threat updates under a vendor’s breadth of services, as well as looking for updated Web portals that provide customers with a wide range of options for reporting and analysis. In recent months, Symantec Managed Security Services announced increased vulnerability scanning capabilities, enhancements to its Global Emerging Threat Notification Program, and the launch of the new Secure Internet Interface 3.0 customer Web portal, which provides clients with greater visibility into their security posture and deeper perspective on how to mitigate risks in the global threat landscape.

Symantec Managed Security Services leverages global intelligence to offer fast and accurate analysis of security data to protect customers against emerging threats and reduce overall security risk. Its 24×7 real-time services enhance an organization’s information security posture through continuous monitoring and management, expert analysis, and immediate response to potential security threats. In addition, Symantec’s SOCs have been fully audited and certified by independent third parties to meet industry leading standards, including BS7799 certification and SAS70 Type II audits.

To achieve Magic Quadrant recognition, Symantec was evaluated by Gartner in the following areas:
Ability to Execute: Annual revenue or investment funding, breadth of channel partners, management experience, and mindshare.

Vision: Research and development, breadth of services, security management processes, device management technology, reporting, and Web-based portal.

According to Gartner, Inc., leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
