Sygate Redefines Endpoint Security; Innovates Industry’s First Enterprise Security Solution For Continuous Compliance and Protection
FREMONT, Calif.-May 24, 2004-Sygate Technologies, the market leader of enterprise endpoint security solutions, announced today a new solution with the release of an advanced set of products designed to deliver the highest level of network protection available (see separate announcement dated May 24, 2004). The product set, comprised of Sygate Secure Enterprise 4.0, Sygate OnDemand 2.0, and Magellan 1.0, enables organizations to establish continuous protection and compliance for all devices, applications and behaviors on their networks. By delivering this comprehensive product set, Sygate has extended its newly automated Continuous Protection process of discovery, compliance, enforcement and remediation to every conceivable endpoint, including desktops, laptops, servers, employee and consultant-owned equipment, public kiosks, and IP-enabled embedded devices such as ATMs or point-of-sale equipment that are network connected. This process changes the fundamental method, economics and results of enterprise information protection and, for the first time, ensures 100 percent compliance with corporate security policy 100 percent of the time, meeting the real-world challenges of keeping corporate information and networks safe.
In addition to the new product set for enterprises, Sygate is expanding endpoint security into new territory – Sygate recently entered the fast-growing Windows XP Embedded devices market, with its first-to-market endpoint security solution for retail point-of-sale terminals, ATMs and other special-purpose devices (see announcement dated May 17, 2004).
“Sygate has proven it has the vision and technical acumen to deliver truly innovative products that secure the online world and allow businesses and consumers to receive the full benefits that the Internet provides,” said Howard A. Schmidt, former chairman of the President’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board and a member of Sygate’s board of directors. “Sygate’s approach to endpoint protection is highly strategic and has helped facilitate a much needed fundamental shift in focus from reacting to threats to eliminating the exposures that subject networks to compromise. Sygate’s technology enables organizations to maximize the effectiveness of existing investments, implement best practices for security on an operational and cultural level, and comply with increasingly stringent regulatory requirements without restricting the benefits of Internet-based technology. I look forward to working closely with the company as it continues to evolve as an influential force in enterprise security.”
Continuous Protection
The Internet has opened up the corporate network to support global access and enable the adoption of new services and improved business operations, creating a multitude of network exposures that are not addressed by current technologies. These exposures – which in today’s environment are predominantly introduced at the endpoint – significantly increase the risk of stolen information, network downtime, lost productivity, and an overloaded help desk – resulting in financial loss and damaged credibility.
Sygate’s advanced product set is based on a Continuous Protection process – discovery, compliance, enforcement and remediation – and enables organizations to eliminate business disruption, information theft, security costs and regulatory violations due to rogue and compromised devices.
– Through discovery, organizations can expose who and what is on their network, including “network dark matter”
– compromised or rogue devices or device configurations that have not been discovered – in order to bring them under active management.
– Compliance ensures that connected devices stay compliant, automatically adapting device policy based on role, location and connection. With Sygate’s Adaptive Protection feature, compliance is continuous and transparent to all users and ensures that security is maintained without engaging or constricting users.
– Sygate ensures continuous and complete enforcement of security policies throughout the enterprise, eliminating exposures from devices whether they’re computers owned by the company, partners, consultants employees or public kiosks, or embedded devices such as ATMs, point-of-sale solutions and networked medical equipment.
– Remediation ensures that non-compliant devices are restored to compliance and admitted to the network automatically, eliminating user efforts, helpdesk calls or costly technician repair trips.
“It is common in the security industry to focus on ‘the bad thing’ – hackers, worms, viruses, trojans – and subsequently, security technology is mostly called upon to address the negative,” said John De Santis, CEO, Sygate. “Sygate focuses on the positive, leveraging policy and continuous compliance to ‘do the right thing.’ This has resonated extremely well with our customers, particularly in light of increased governmental regulations and controls. As some of the world’s largest companies continue to embrace policy enforcement and the importance of eliminating exposures in the network, they have discovered the value of Sygate’s product as a strategic tool that not only protects their networks but also enforces compliance around regulatory initiatives such as Sarbannes-Oxley, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, and Homeland Security.”
Industry Validates Sygate’s Innovative Approach
“Yesterday’s business consequences of malware pale in comparison to today. Many things have changed – increasing regulatory requirements, hostility of hackers, business critical dependence on the mobile connectivity via the Internet,” said Scott Harroff, director, Global Information Security at Diebold, Incorporated. “Sygate, more than any other company we’ve encountered, understands the strategic value of eradicating network exposures through policy enforcement and offers a sophisticated, comprehensive solution that protects our corporate network from compromise that can lead to damage and loss.”
“We team with companies like Sygate to provide our enterprise customers the critical endpoint protection needed to realize a comprehensive approach to security,” said Sarah Daniels, vice president of product management and marketing, Aventail. “Because organizations rely on a wide variety of users who need both local and remote network access to critical applications and information, enterprises must be able to dynamically allow access without compromising their networks.”
“The rapid propagation of blended threats and worms has increased enterprises’ willingness to deny network access to hosts that likely will cause damage. Enterprises must improve their perimeter security, but they also must realize that the perimeter has changed. It now includes corporate laptops, home computers and other devices,” said Mark Nicolett, in his February 2004 Management Update: Scan, Block and Quarantine to Survive Worm Attacks. “By the first quarter of 2005, enterprises that don’t enforce security policies during network login will experience 200 percent more network downtime than those that do.”
Demonstrating Industry Leadership
As a testament to Sygate’s leadership, the company has earned numerous industry accolades over the last year, including:
– Joining the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) as a primary member of its new Trusted Network Connect (TNC) Subgroup, dedicated to the development and adoption of an open industry specification for endpoint enforcement (see separate release dated May 11, 2004). Sygate was the catalyst in the formation of a consortium comprised of switch and endpoint security vendors concerned with creating an industry standard for securing endpoint connections to networks. The original consortium evolved into the TNC Subgroup within TCG.
– Red Herring selected Sygate as one of its prestigious Red Herring 100 companies (May 2004)
– Sygate secured the leadership position in Gartner’s Personal Firewall Magic Quadrant (July 2003)
– Sygate’s Personal Firewall Pro 5 was awarded PC World’s World Class Award for 2003 (June 2003)
– Network Computing recognized Sygate again with a Well-Connected award in the category of Desktop Firewall security (April 2003)
– Sygate was awarded Network Computing’s prestigious Editors’ Choice award for placing first in a rigorous comparative review of centrally managed desktop firewall solutions (February 2003)
