Sophos Offers Free Computer Security Assessments For The NHS
Sophos, a global leader in anti-virus and anti-spam protection for businesses, announced its ‘Health Check’ campaign to increase the value of its anti-virus service for NHS organisations. As part of this campaign, Sophos is providing a free computer security assessment, conducted by a Sophos-certified representative, to all NHS organisations in the UK.
To assist the NHS in running a computer environment impermeable to virus attacks, Sophos is making this service available free of charge. The assessment includes a visit from a Sophos specialist who will assess the computer network and report on any potential virus hotspots.

Currently, Sophos protects over 25 per cent of NHS systems – more than 130,000 computers – from viruses, worms and Trojan horses. New NHS customers include South Staffordshire Health NHS Trust, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, South Sefton Primary Care Trust, Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust and North Glamorgan NHS Trust. Sophos products, which protect the desktop, servers and gateway with award-winning anti-virus technology, and 24-hour technical support, are available at a preferential rate to NHS organisations throughout the UK.
“The ease of migration from our previous anti-virus solution to Sophos was trouble-free,” said Gareth Thomas, deputy IT support manager at North Glamorgan NHS Trust. “The crucial factor was to ensure that all servers and users would be updated with the latest virus protection, and Sophos Enterprise Manager meets this need by efficiently checking, downloading and distributing new protection every hour. As an added bonus, employees also have the option to protect their home computers with Sophos free of charge.”
“The NHS is just as vulnerable to computer attacks as any other organisation or company,” said David Stanley, general manager at Sophos. “A virus incident could destroy medical data, compromise confidentiality or render communication tools like email unusable. By assessing their current security measures, we can help the NHS protect its data and its reputation.”
Enterprise Manager allows network administrators to specify the time and frequency of downloads – providing them with full control of their anti-virus protection. This administration service schedules automatic downloads of the very latest virus protection from a dedicated Sophos website, ensuring that even during periods of heavy web traffic, updates arrive as soon as they are available.
