ZixCorp is Selected By University of Utah Health Sciences Center to Provide Enterprise-wide Email Security in Compliance with HIPAA
UUHSC continues thought leadership through educational outreach program intended to inform users about requirement and benefits of email privacy and security
DALLAS — April 17, 2003 — Zix Corporation (ZixCorpâ„?), (Nasdaq: ZIXI), a global provider of emessaging management and protection services, today announced it has been selected by the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC), a major university-based patient care hospital system, education, research, and health professions training center for a six-state region, to provide secure email for 12,000 users including physicians, students, and staff. UUHSC purchased ZixVPMâ„? (Zix Virtual Private Messengerâ„?), a company-wide gateway solution that provides policy-driven secure email, and ZixPortâ„?, an integrated secure e-messaging portal that mirrors the look and feel of the organization’s existing Web portal. UUHSC will encrypt Protected Health Information (PHI) to comply with the privacy regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which had a deadline of April 14, 2003. The University of Utah Medical Group, a group of 850 board certified physicians, also played an important role in the initiative and selection of the solution.
“When we were determining our needs for complying with HIPAA, email was one of our priorities,” said Brad Nelson, HIPAA analyst at the UUHSC. “We found ZixCorp could deliver an offering that met all of our needs: a user friendly service; turnkey installation; industry interoperability; and even an outreach and training program — the ZixEvangelismâ„? program — to help educate our employees, patients and partners about email privacy and security. We also appreciate being able to communicate with physicians and individuals participating in the HealthyEmailâ„? program, which has the effect of extending the coverage area of our solution to our network of physician providers.”
UUHSC will use the initiatives of HealthyEmail, a nonprofit organization created to maximize the potential of email use in the healthcare industry. The HealthyEmail initiative will provide secure email for approximately 8,000 doctors in the six-state region communicating regularly with UUHSC. ZixCorp is providing two-year secure email licenses of ZixMailâ„?, a desktop-level encryption service, to every physician in the United States through the HealthyEmail program.
The ZixEvangelism program provides ZixCorp customers the tools they need to communicate effectively about the privacy and security mechanism and policies to employees and partners, including patients. The program makes various tools available to encourage employees to get into the habit of being security conscious when sending email messages so that partners can better understand an organization’s policies and the best way to communicate sensitive information via email.
“We are honored to have been selected by UUHSC to help them meet their HIPAA requirement,” says Daniel S. Nutkis, vice president of strategy and products for ZixCorp. “It is impressive to see an organization as dedicated to educating their employees, patients, and partners on the topic of privacy.”
The University of Utah Health Sciences Center has been included on the Hospitals and Health Network’s Top 100 Most Wired list four years in a row. UUHSC has also been ranked for nine years among America’s Best Hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 13th annual survey of leading healthcare institutions.
