Trend Micro to Join Nikkei Stock Average
Tokyo, Japan – September 9, 2002 – Trend Micro Inc. (TSE: 4704, Nasdaq:TMIC), a leading provider of antivirus and Internet content security software and services for business enterprises, announced today that it has been chosen as a component of the Nikkei Stock Average, effective at the beginning of trading on September 19, 2002. The 225-share Nikkei Stock Average is Japan’s most widely followed stock market index, composed of leading companies listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
“We’re proud to be selected for the Nikkei Stock Average, the most widely-used indicator of stock market activity in Japan. The decision is a vote of confidence that Nikkei views Trend Micro as a solid, well-managed company,” said Mahendra Negi, Chief Financial Officer of Trend Micro, Inc.
According to Nikkei Net Interactive, the Nikkei Stock Average has been calculated continuously since 1950 using the Dow Jones method, which reflects the ex-rights-adjusted average stock prices of component companies. Since the index is expected to represent more than 1400 stocks listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s first section — and by extension the market in general — it is therefore subject to periodic review and adjustment. Companies are removed from the index when they are de-listed from the exchange due to changes in corporate structure. In addition, the mix of components is re-balanced from time to time to assure that all issues in the index are both highly liquid and representative of Japan’s industrial structure. In the current reshuffle, Trend Micro is one of eight companies that will replace outgoing shares in the index by October 2.
“Joining the Nikkei 225 puts Trend Micro in good company, among many of Japan’s best-known and most successful corporations,” said Steve Chang, Trend Micro’s Chairman and CEO. “We will strive to deliver shareholder value through continued growth by taking advantage of our leadership position in various regions and markets.” A recent independent study by International Data Corporation (IDC) named Trend Micro the worldwide leader in server-based antivirus software, including market share leadership in the categories of virus protection for the Internet gateway (web server) and email server. (IDC Bulletin, August 2002). Trend Micro is also the antivirus market leader in one of the largest and fastest growing Internet markets: Japan. At the end of 2001, Internet users in Japan totalled 56 million, or 44 percent of Japanese people aged six years or older, up from 37% a year earlier, according to government figures.
