WatchGuard Announces Defense In Depth Solution To Combat Latest Internet Worm Threats
New Solution Augments Best of Breed Firewall and VPN Appliances With Web Server Protection
SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 6, 2001–WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:WGRD), a leader in Internet security, today announced new defense-in-depth solutions designed to protect enterprise networks and servers against damage from Internet worms, such as Code Red and its derivatives.
The new Wormbuster solutions are designed for companies with Web sites running Microsoft(R) IIS on Windows NT(R) and Windows(R) 2000 servers, and enable these customers to rapidly deploy comprehensive protection for their systems from a range of security threats at both the network perimeter and server level.
“Internet worms such as Code Red are the hacking wave of the future,” said Jack Danahy, senior vice president, Server Security at WatchGuard. “They are automated, they can strike at random and spread quickly, and they are carried in trusted traffic. To combat the threat, networks need protection at the perimeter as well as protection on servers. This approach is the foundation of the WatchGuard defense-in-depth security strategy, and these new solutions enable our customers to implement comprehensive security quickly in order to protect their network.”
Many existing products are inadequate against Internet worm attacks, providing protection from the network effects of the attack, such as denial of service, but ignoring the exploits executed on the server itself, such as the installation of Trojan horses, back doors, and the corruption of Web content. The recent proliferation of Internet worms and related forms of malicious hacks signals the need for an easy and comprehensive security solution. The powerful combination of the award-winning WatchGuard Firebox products and the innovative, one-button Web site security of AppLock/Web is designed to protect WatchGuard customers from damage at every level of attack.
“When Code Red attacked, we were ready,” said Daniel Amatulli, IT manager for Royalblue N.A. “We had AppLock/Web in place to block the exploits on our server, while the Firebox continued to limit the types of traffic that were allowed inside the network.”
